They have this really old Jail from the time the British were in control. Its very cool and you will learn a lot. Kilmainham Jail is the name of it.
Also the National Gallery of Ireland is world class. They have a Caravaggio, a Vermeer, Monet, Pissaro, Van Eyck (my favorite), William Turner and more.

hi, there's a fair bit in Dublin for families. Book of Kells, as mentioned above, Kilmainham Gaol (also mentioend above), the Phoenix Park (largest park in Europe, also the zoo is there). Walking around the city centre can be nice. The National Gallery is good if the kids are old enough (otherwise they may be bored, but i guess it depends on your kids!). There are a good few public parks, although all sadly lacking in facilities for kids.

It may not seem like a "natural" fit for a family from the US, but actually the pubs are quite family oriented. You can meet the locals there and they love to chat. The kids can be exposed to the great music too. I'm actually a non-drinker (completely), but the pubs are where I'll be when I go.
