I have imported 3 cars in the past few years from the UK to the Republic of Ireland. Brought one over when we moved here and 2 others since.

You need to register your new car with the local Vehicle Registration Office within 2 days supposedly. This link shows you where the VROs are located http://vrt.ie/vrtDetail.php?page=18 They work out how much Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) you must pay, based on their computer's list of how much similar cars cost to buy in Ireland, not what you paid for it so be careful, you could end up paying 20% of the purchase price in VRT.

I appealed the VRT on the last car I bought on Ebay in the UK as the VRO over-valued it by €6,000 Euro. They wanted €3700 VRT. Had to pay initially but won the appeal and got about €700 back

This website might help you understand http://www.vrt.ie/

You can insure your car here on UK plates but most insurance companies insist you get Irish plates within 28 days which means a trip to the VRO to pay the duty and often an NCT test too. No such thing as an MOT in Ireland, I thought you would know that living here?

You will receive the registration documents through once you pay the VRT and the motor tax office will send you a form to pay the tax.

You would need to get in touch with the DVLA at Swansea either by letter, explaining just what you need,I am certain you will get loads of stuff back to tell you just what you need to do...or by eMail there email address can be found on Google under DVLA Swansea....
