Ive just been watching father Ted, and as far as i know that is the only Irish show on British tv. I don't know anything about Irish TV. How many Irish channels are there? Do you know of any good Irish shows which i could perhaps watch online?
And do you guys get British channels/shows on the telly in Ireland?

There are in fact 5 irish TV stations, RTE1 & RTE2 (our version of yer BBC), TV3 & there smaller sister station 3e (our version of yer ITV) and our fifth channel is an irish language station called TG4, it is an irish speaking dedicated station but since it has such a small audience, it also shows some US hows like True Blood, the Wire, Nip/Tuck etc.

They are our standard channels (ecept for 3e, that can only be gotten through digital services).

On top of these channels, we can get all the 'Sky' channels that ye get though Sky or NTL/Chorus or whatever. that includes BBC, ITV, sky sports, sky movies... all the channels ye can get, (including UTV) and BBC Northern Ireland).

The most famous Irish TV show is called the Late Late show, its a three hour talk show on everyday friday night and it is the longest running chat show in the world. It has held, and remains to have, extreme cultural and socail importance in ireland. It holds such reverence in Irish culture that the likes of Johnaton Ross, Parkinson or any of the USA chatshows such as Letterman or Leno could only dream of! However i wouldnt advise youtubing that as well, the show is like 40+ years old so theres probaly a lot of clips, from muhammed ali to bono to pat the baker!

If you like Fr. Ted and if you like sports, i would advise checking these videos out. Irish football sport commentary is very different to Linker and co at the BBC and Sky. They analysis the matches a lot more intelligently and critically than their British conterparts.

The first link here is a clip of the normal commentators, while the other ones are from a sketch chow taking the piss out of them all!

Edit: Fr. Ted was indeed made by channel 4 so is technical a British show, even though all the actors, writers and producers were irish themselves. However, RTE (the irish station) never 'turned down' Fr. Ted., Everybody seems to think that but in fact it was never offered to RTE!

Yes you can get british tv in Ireland. I have sky and have all the channels you have in britain. In counties near the north bbc utv etc can be picked up by ariel too but people further away need either satelite or cable to view british tv (almost everyone does) . There are 4 irish channels, rte 1 rte2 tv3 and tg4 also now there is a new one 3e.

When I was a kid my parents didn't have cable or satelite in. It sucked I could only watch two channels, rte 1 and 2, then around 1998 tv3 came out and tg4 earlier I think but I didnt really care about that because that channel is in the irish language.

As for good Irish shows..................black books isnt strictly Irish but Dylan moran is Irish. Also the panel is a very good comedy talk show. Hmm there isnt anything else that great really :( .

There are 5 Irish channels, RTE 1 and 2, TV3 (which may as well be ITV) ,3e and TG4, and we get all the UK channels too, including the likes of Dave tv......

Fr Ted was actually made by Channel 4, so, strictly speaking its not an Irish show, RTE rejected it. have a look at 'Podge and Rodge' for some Irish warped humour, but I usually look at factual Irish programmes, or chat shows. However, our sports shows are great craic, no holds barred, call it like it is. You should try catch some of it when the world cup is on, so much better then the dry presentation , politically correct crap on the BBC, or ITV.

Of coure we get British telly .... with satellite packages, you can get pretty much whatever you want.

I know that some of the soaps are shown at the same time, so Irish people watch them on some of the Irish channels as well.

Irish channels: RTE 1, RTE2, TV3 and the Irish language channel TG4.

If you can get Podge and Rodge online, it will give you more insight into Irish humour, but be warned, they are way past riské - filthy dirty old men puppets covers it. But you can get lots of programmes online, just go the www.rte.ie and have a browse.

There are 4 Irish channels.. RTE1 RTE2 TG4 (Irish language) and TV3. A lot people in Ireland do have Satellite TV so we have Sky and the other 900 channels on Satellite.

Even the people that don't have Satellite tv generally have BBC1 BBC2 and Channel 4 along with the other Irish channels. And we get a lot of british shows even on the irish channels

Yes, we get British TV on sky, cable and satellite. People living in the east coast or close to the border with N.Ireland get the overspill from those areas, but the rest of us need other means.

Irish channels are RTE1, RTE2, TV3 and TG4. If you go to www.rte.ie, many shows can be viewed there for some weeks after broadcast. I don't have any idea which type of shows appeal to you, but I like our documentary programmes.

Alan M - primary school pupil. That explains a lot. We don't expect primary school students to have a good broad grasp of important events, or reality for that matter.

This is what I get over an ordinary aerial:

Irish channels:

- RTÉ 1

- RTÉ 2

- TG4

(I don't get TV3).

Northern Ireland / UK Channels:

- BBC 1 N I

- BBC 2 N I

- UTV (This is the Northern Ireland ITV franchise)

- Channel 4

(I don't get Channel 5).

I know it varies depending on where in the country you are. I live about 20 miles from the border, so it is possible I get the NI channels through 'overspill'. They might also be transmitted from here too.

Actually, Father Ted was made by Channel 4.

Turkey has British TV programs. I'm sure Ireland has.

Yeah we get bbc sky and everything else like discovery, movies, MTV and everything else. Lots have people have sky subscriptions so we'd get the same channels as over in the uk.

here we have RTE1, RTE2, TV3, TG4...Setanta Sports, thats it really.

since father ted there hasnt been anything really worth mentioning. Killinaskully was the last big venture series wise by RTE and it doesnt come close to father ted which was made by Channel4 by the way.

Alan - Are you just trying to p*ss people off or are you actually that stupid? You know perfectly well that Ireland is not part of the UK cos we got them the f*ck out.

Our irish channels are RTE and RTE2 (payed for through license fees like the bbc) and we also have TG4 (programmes are in the irish language) and TV3 (who also own 3E on sky).

where i live we also get BBC northern ireland(BBC1 and BBC2), UTV (gets most of the ITVshows) and Channel 4.

And if you get SKY you get all the channels that are available to UK viewers.

Actually Father Ted is British made and yes we do get the British channels if we didn't then TV would be very boring with just the 5 Irish channels.

Truly, there is absolutely no assessment absolutely....simply because watching television depends on the gunky imagination of a TV entertainer who's main concerns are budget, popularity and ratings and also to Hell with theme integrity, or, for example, anything truly creative.

My mate tells me there are 4 channels; RTE 1 & 2, an ITV style channel, and a Gaelic language channel.

Plus Freesat is readily available there.

apparently there's a good 'shameless' type programme in ireland (n.ireland, set in belfast i think) but i've totally forgotten the name....someone'll know.

btw, graham lineham did the it crowd too, and it is hilarious...(not irish like father ted - but there's an irish lad in it at least:))

The other thing is, like itv - regional - is totally different, but then even between manchester and leeds that can be totally different.

RTE 1 and RTE 2, TV3 and TG4, all show some shows aired in the UK, such as EastEnders, but it has adverts in Ireland.

The UK networks are only broadcast to Northern Ireland.
