It depends on what you want to do. For nature/ old Ireland sightseeing I would go to Kerry and drive the ring. Visit Dingle,Tralee, and Kilarney. There is an airport in Kilarney served by Ryan air and Air Lingus. Otherwise I'd stay in Dublin. Temple bar is great fun as is the Guinness tour and the national Art Gallery in Merrion Square. It is an under appreciated treasure.

For a quick trip to an interesting area, you might fly into Shannon and take the fairly easy drive to Doolin where some of the best musicians hang out. The Cliffs of Moher are a great sight and you can take a boat out to the Aran Islands from there. If there's time, hiking and driving about in the Burren is memorable. Then back to Shannon for your flight home.

Lots of great ideas but a weekend is not long enough. It will take you a day to recover from the jet lag. We've gone for a week at a time in the past and even that was too short. Our next trip is going to be two weeks.

A weekend is really nothing. Depends if you like larger cities like Dublin. You can go there, have fun at night with great pubs and during the day visit really great sites around Dublin, my favorite just north of it being Newgrange Mounds.

But my favorite larger city is Galway. Also great nightlife, not as big, and wonderful travel to Connemara to the NW or just go south to Clare with the Cliffs of Moher and the wonderful Doolin with nice pubs and live music. You can easily get there from Shannon Airport if you fly in there.
